When you keep your feelings in side as long as Gene did and then lie to yourself by saying that you aren't actually feeling them, you sort of lose control over your actions. Gene could just be reacting violently to Finny and all the anger he has inside of him, or he could be angry at Finny for being such a great person. Finny wasn't ever jealous of Gene or attempting to beat him in academics, and Gene's realization of this makes him more angry because he knows that he can never have the same loyalty as Finny. This all sort of spills out of him, and he jounces the limb. As to whether it was done consciously or subconsciously, we can only guess. I personally think that it was subconscious or "spur of the moment", not planned or really thought about ahead of time at all.","dateCreated":"1254323484","smartDate":"Sep 30, 2009","userCreated":{"username":"htroup2294","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/htroup2294","imageUrl":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/pic\/1251764138\/htroup2294-lg.jpg"}},{"id":"14874524","body":"Katie and Natalie, I agree with you both. I see it as he meant to jounce the limb, but not to hurt Phinny. I think Gene assumed that Phinny would be fine, able to catch himself. I think Gene may not have even know the extent of his own emotions; his resentment against and competition with Phinny.","dateCreated":"1254341299","smartDate":"Sep 30, 2009","userCreated":{"username":"rwelty2295","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/rwelty2295","imageUrl":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/pic\/1332523881\/rwelty2295-lg.jpg"}},{"id":"14875376","body":"After reading Hannah's post, I agree with her. She said Gene jiggled the branch without really realizing it. I think everything was building up inside Gene that made him jiggle the branch subconsciously. Gene's jealousy and obsession over being better than Finny at something got to the best of him, and instead of helping Finny, he kept going and jumped off the branch. I think Gene jiggled it without thinking, and after he did, Gene was surprised with himself and glad that Finny made a mistake.","dateCreated":"1254342416","smartDate":"Sep 30, 2009","userCreated":{"username":"hcyphers-htsd","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/hcyphers-htsd","imageUrl":"https:\/\/ssl.wikicdn.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"}},{"id":"14875926","body":"I defintiely agree with Haley about Hannah. You have one quote that says, "It was surprising how well we got along in these weeks. Sometime I found it hard to remember his treachery, sometimes I found myself slipping back into affection for him again." First of all, this quote is invalid because Gene says this while he still believes that Finny has this deep seeded rivalry regarding Gene's academics and Finny's athletics. At the time when Gene jiggles the limb, Gene has discovered that Finny does not and never has had any rivalry with him so he was never out to get him in the first place. In addition, I disagree with what you said about how Gene going to the S.S.S.S.S. meetings proves that Gene thinks that Finny is his best friend. As we know, it is actually Gene's inability to say no that keeps Gene going to the meetings.","dateCreated":"1254354281","smartDate":"Sep 30, 2009","userCreated":{"username":"brianshields","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/brianshields","imageUrl":"https:\/\/ssl.wikicdn.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"}},{"id":"14885066","body":"Nolan I do not think Gene would do it on purpose either but also there is evidence that Gene may just be jealous and want to at least even the playing field like he said. Gene thinks he could do it in his academics and when Gene saw that opprotunity to do that to Finny he probably took that chance to see what would happen. A big question of mine is whether Gene does think of Finny as his best friend because Gene was held back from saying that to Finny on the beach. Does anyone have an answer to whether you think Gene thinks of Finny as a best friend?","dateCreated":"1254355092","smartDate":"Sep 30, 2009","userCreated":{"username":"s-htsd","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/s-htsd","imageUrl":"https:\/\/ssl.wikicdn.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"}},{"id":"14887814","body":"Adam I agree with you because Finny really did waste Gene's life and prevented him from his studies. For instance, Finny made Gene accompany him to the beach. Gene was aggrivated about having to go to the SSSSS meeting and saw an oppurtunity to pay back Phineas for wasting Gene's time.","dateCreated":"1254357770","smartDate":"Sep 30, 2009","userCreated":{"username":"DorenkottB-htsd","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/DorenkottB-htsd","imageUrl":"https:\/\/ssl.wikicdn.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"}},{"id":"14891724","body":"Brian when you responded to my post you say that it is his own inability to say no that keeps Gene going to the SSSSS meetings, but i think that the true reason is that he has become so accustome to going to the meetings that it would seem truly idiotic to miss after being apart of the club for so long. Also, i believe that if he weren't feeling atleast some affection toward phineas that it would be quite easy to say no to going to the meetings, even though he had previously been unable to say no to his best friend.","dateCreated":"1254362294","smartDate":"Sep 30, 2009","userCreated":{"username":"JacobAdams20","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/JacobAdams20","imageUrl":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/pic\/1284332062\/JacobAdams20-lg.jpg"}},{"id":"14891998","body":"Nolan why did you say that Gene shook the limb as a joke to see if Finny could keep his balance and then you said that you agree with Mary about him not doing it consciously. I was just a little confused that you didn't stick behind your original post. But other than that I don't really agree with our original post because why would Gene, now, after all his negative feelings toward Finny leading up to this point, decide to joke around with him and put him in danger of getting hurt, which was what happened. I feel that the overwhelming evidence shows that he was intentionally trying to hurt Finny.","dateCreated":"1254362692","smartDate":"Sep 30, 2009","userCreated":{"username":"AAdams3024","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/AAdams3024","imageUrl":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/pic\/1253489008\/AAdams3024-lg.jpg"}},{"id":"14892266","body":"Hannah, I wanted to ask you that question that Mrs. Thomson said today.
